Apostille in Sweden

Apostille for Swedish documents

Will a Swedish document be presented to an authority, bank, court, university or contractual party abroad? An apostille can authenticate the document’s signature and seal for use in another Convention country, but the document type, issuing body and recipient’s requirements must first be checked.

  • Issued by a notary public
  • For Convention countries
  • Recipient sets the requirements

Get the document sequence right from the start

Population certificates, powers of attorney, passport copies and diplomas do not always follow the same route. We help you identify the right document, the right sequence and which originals actually need to be sent.

When does a document need an apostille?

An apostille is generally relevant when a Swedish public document will be used in another country covered by the Hague Convention and the recipient wants its origin authenticated. Simplified EU rules may remove the apostille requirement for certain public documents. Check both the country and the document before ordering.

  • Population certificates and other public records
  • Diplomas and certain education documents
  • Corporate documents, powers of attorney and certified copies after the correct preparation

What does an apostille certify – and what does it not certify?

The apostille authenticates the signature, the capacity in which the person signed and, where relevant, the identity of the seal or stamp. It does not confirm that the document’s contents are correct and does not replace the recipient’s requirements for an original, translation or recently issued document.

How to prepare an apostille case

Gather the recipient’s written instructions, a clear copy of the entire document and the country where it will be used. Check that names, dates, signatures, printed names and any official seal are legible. A private document may need notarisation before an apostille can be issued.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who issues apostilles in Sweden?

In Sweden, only a notary public may issue an apostille. Apostille 365 helps check the requirements and prepare the case so that the correct documents proceed to an authorised notary public.

How do I start if I do not know what my document needs?

Start with the document type, the country where it will be used and the intended recipient. If you have instructions or a checklist from the recipient, include them. This makes it easier to distinguish between an apostille, notarisation, a certified copy, translation and legalisation.

Do I need to send the original straight away?

You can usually start with a clear scanned copy. If the original is needed for comparison, signature certification or an apostille, you will receive separate instructions on what to send and how to label it.
