Three questions usually determine the route
Who issued the document? What must the recipient be able to verify? In which country will it be used? Those answers indicate whether to obtain a new official original, present the original for copy certification, sign before a notary public or arrange translation in a particular order.

Avoid ordering the wrong version
Many authorities offer several extracts or certificates containing different information. Ask the recipient to confirm the document name, language, how recently it must have been issued and whether a digital version, original or certified copy is accepted. This prevents delays and repeat orders.
